Commission: Alex and Ragnarok by tgcsilver Commission: Alex and Ragnarok by tgcsilver
Tiro1000 so enjoyed my drawing of his Strike Gundam MKII that he commissioned another piece. This one features "Alex Dino" and his personal Mobile Suit, the Ragnarok. Unlike the Strike, this unit had no previous design to draw upon and so I had some flexibility and challenge in making a visual image.

Here's the bio and technical info for pilot and MS:

Alex Dino - Athrun Zala, now 28 years old (C.E. 82), has always stood for justice. In pursuit of this ideal, he rose through the Orb military to become a prominent admiral. For a time it seemed as though peace was within the world's reach. The PLANTS had moved away from Earth's orbit to avoid conflict; and while the E.A.'s power continued to grow, Orb was able to maintain its neutrality.

All that changed when the E.A. "accidentally" released poison gas into the Jericho colony. Athrun immediatley called for an intervention, taking the matter directly to Chief Representative Atha. She replied that Orb would maintain its neutrality, as it should. Athrun's reply was to leave his admiral's pin on her desk.

Not long after, a rebel fighter armed with a Murasame began calling for resistance fighters to gather under the Democratic Rebellion of the Earth Alliance and it's Military, or DREAM. Alex Dino and his companion, Meyrin Hawke, gathered anyone who wanted to resist the Earth Alliance's aggressive expansion.

DREAM's first big move was to attempt to steal several prototype units from an E.A. base. During the conflict, one unit was destroyed while a second remained in enemy hands. Only one unit, a Strike Gundam Mk. II, returned to DREAM. Alex was stunned to learn that the pilot was not his own, but a young man who had leaped into the Mobile Suit. Commander Dino took it upon himself to train the young man, Tiro, in the art of Mobile Suit combat. Their future, and the conflicts both men will face, remain unknown.

GMX-100 Ragnarok - Constructed by newly-founded Dreamcatcher Industries and using the data from the Strike Mk. II, it is the first mobile suit made specifically for use by DREAM. A high mobility mobile suit, equipped with wing binders for higher maneuverability. It's armaments include two Variable Speed Beam Cannons, two beam sabers, and two medium sized ani ship swords. When combined back-to-back, the sword tips extend upwards and the twin swords become one large, double-bladed anti-ship sword. Additionally, the wings can fold back on their holders and press against the cannons, so the Ragnarok can still fight in enclosed areas and wield the cannons without impediment. The Ragnarok enjoys the use of Variable Phase Shift Armor, and also has it's entire frame is treated with Reflective Beam Coating.

Great story idea for good ol Athrun! And I love the machine's design! It reminds me of the good ol Zeon style mobile suits from the original show, red armor and mono eye and all that good stuff :D

Does the Ragnarok have transformation capabilities like alot of Athrun's previous mechs did?

Also, is Meyrin Hawk a pilot now too? or did ya mean Lunamaria?

It take a lot of practice, and I draw upon a lot of resources.

When designing a Mobile Suit, I look through MAHQ.net, and old issues of Hobby Link Japan for inspiration. Then I find a pose reference from the show and use that as a starting point.

I sketch it out in Photoshop, but the lineart is done in Adobe Illustrator. Illustrator offers great control over lines and can be adjusted time and again.

Then I finally color the piece back in Photoshop.

I hope that helps.

It is Tiro's idea. He's been telling me about the story with each commission and I think it's shaping up nicely. I hope my drawings contribute to the piece.

I wouldn't worry about not contributing, because when it finally is posted readers can have visuals for most of the OCs and Original MSs, and that helps a lot. Hopefully it'll be posted soon.
